Plant pathogens strongly shape plant populations and communities through negative density-dependent effects, especially when pathogens have narrow host ranges.  But few plant pathogens are strongly species specific; often pathogens are polyphagous, attacking a variety of plant species.  The host ranges are not random, but reflect the evolutionary histories of plant hosts.  A phylogenetic approach to studying host ranges of plant pathogens helps add a predictive element to the impacts and behaviors of pathogens in diverse plant communities.
