Chinese Teacher Workshop

SCHEDULE 8:30am-8:55am: Check In   9:00am-11:30am Speaker: Prof Hong Zhang; Tenured Instructor of Chinese and Associate Faculty member of Music at Binghamton University. Title: Teaching Chinese through Song Description: This highly engaging and interactive workshop will introduce the groundbreaking approach of learning Chinese through song. Participants will go through a step-by-step learning progression to obtain the basics of vocal techniques including posture, breathing, voice projection, and singing expression. Using these newly acquired skills, they will practice 5 or 6 Chinese songs. They will walk away with the confidence and skills to improve their pronunciation, diction, voice projection and language expression through singing. This workshop provides audience members with the necessary knowledge and skills to apply this new approach. They will feel confident about teaching their students to sing Chinese songs both as linguistic acquisition and cultural activities.   11:30am-12:30pm Breakout Session Description: Divide into Elementary, Middle School, High School, College and Sunday School groups to share teaching experience   12:30pm-1:30pm: Lunch   1:30pm-4:30pm Speaker: Dr. Henry Ruan; Adjunct Professor and Supervisor of student teaching at Teachers College Columbia University and Hofstra University. Title: Are they really learning Chinese? –Ways to improve your teaching effesctiveness Description: The presentation will include: introduction of the topic, discussion on a real class scenario, designing a class activity, sharing and Q/A
