Teaching Contested Narritives

How can both learning and reconciliation occur in the midst of an enduring conflict?  Ten years of ethnographic research by our guest speaker at bilingual and bicultural Palestinian-Jewish schools in Israel sheds light on this important process.  Narratives are brought forth, exchanged, and contested as the actors continually negotiate identity, language, and culture in a context of shared and disputed resources, ethnic-religious affiliations, political beliefs, and historical accounts.  This important presentation describes a new focus for peach-oriented education - preparing students to become artists of design, helping them to construct new ways of living together - while exploring and deconstructing the very real barriers that exist between them.
