Constitution and Citizenship Day

Freedom of the Press

The Alien & Sedition Acts of 1798 were an early challenge to this freedom, in that criticism of the Congress or President was made a crime. Today we hear harsh rhetoric from elected officials targeting the press. What is meant by freedom of the press, and what protection is offered by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution? How well has this freedom withstood the tests of time, and what does it mean for us now?

IUPUC will observe Constitution & Citizenship Day with panel and open discussion about freedom of the press. The event will occur in CC167, 12 noon – 1pm. The panel will be comprised of community members and IUPUC faculty. Feel free to bring a lunch and learn about the relevance of the US Constitution today.
