James P. White Lecture Series on Legal Education

The James P. White Lecture Series on Legal Education presents Law Schools - A Time of New Burdens and New Beginnings with The Honorable Sundaresh Menon CJ, SC, Chief Justice of Singapore.     CLE: 1.0 hour of Indiana CLE credit     This is a free event, but registration is required.     Legal education is at the crossroads. The practice of law is changing dramatically in response to globalization, technology, and new market pressures. This presents a two-fold challenge to law schools. First, it requires them to reflect on whether they are adequately preparing their students for the demands of modern legal practice. Legal education has sometimes been criticized for being untethered to the realities of legal practice, and the divide between the study and the practice of law will only grow wider if urgent steps are not taken to bridge this gap. Second, in demands deep reflection on how the ideals of the legal profession can be safeguarded. As the practice of law grows increasingly commercialized, and legal services become increasingly commoditized, the legal profession is at danger of losing its focus on the importance of public service. Law schools can and must arrest this trend by focusing on the inculcation of professional ethics as being of equal importance to the development of professional competence. Law schools have a duty to act decisively by recognizing the new burdens of practice and being thoughtful in charting new beginnings.           Special Accommodations: Individuals with disabilities who need special assistance should call (317) 274-8036 no later than one week prior to the event.
