Themester Talk: "Hybrid Vigor: The Agency of Dogs in Space," Dr. Amy Nelson (Virginia Tech)

TALK: "Hybrid Vigor: The Agency of Dogs in Space," Dr. Amy Nelson (Virginia Tech)

Using perspectives from ethology and actor-network theory, this talk looks at how mixed breed dogs helped the Soviets develop the first successful manned spaceflight program. The model of animal agency presented here focuses on the space dogs’ relationships and interactions with human researchers, and on the unique social and cognitive capacities of dogs. It suggests that the space dogs’ significance as historical subjects depends as much on what they did as it does on their celebrity and how various human audiences perceived them.

Prof. Amy Nelson (Virginia Tech) co-edited "Other Animals: Beyond the Human in Russian Culture and History" (2010). Nelson's present research focuses on the cultural implications of domestication and the dogs used by the Soviets to develop the manned space flight program.    Using perspectives from ethology and actor-network theory, this talk looks at how mixed breed dogs helped the Soviets develop the first successful manned spaceflight program.
