Bullets, Bulls, and Bibles: Jair Bolsonaro and the Rise of the Far Right in Brazil
On January 1, Brazil swore in far-right congressman Jair Bolsonaro as their new President. Referred to as the "Brazilian Donald Trump" by some, Bolsonaro has also been called "the most misogynistic, hateful politician in the Western world." Bryan Pitts, associate director of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies here at Indiana University, will explain what factors led to Brazil's sharp turn to the right and discuss the prospects for human rights and democracy in Latin America's largest country moving forward. Bryan has been writing about Brazilian politics in academic journals and in media outlets for over a decade. His research explores the shaky commitment of Brazil's civilian "political class" to democracy.
