"Serving Public and... Autocrats: How Free Media Sustain Authoritarian Regimes’ Survival"

The current paradigm of political science suggests that authoritarian regimes suppress Free Media and Freedom of Speech as they could pose significant threats to the autocrats’ survival. However, nowadays there is enough evidence of exploiting such generally believed to be ‘democratic institutions’ in new and surprising ways. The most salient examples include Russia and China where media (even ‘the freest’ ones) became one of the most important instruments in the Autocrats’ toolbox; adding some credence to the idea of non-democratic regimes self-development.
