Service Learning for Social Change: An Introduction to Critical Service Learning
Service learning, when done well, is known to be a high impact educational practice that leads to deeper student learning while engaging both the campus and community in mutually beneficial partnerships. While the term service learning and its evolving practice has been taking hold in higher education for many years, there is a decade+ growing body of literature advocating for a more “critical” approach to service learning, an approach with an explicit social justice focus (Mitchell, 2008). This workshop will introduce the concepts and tenets of critical service learning and equity-mindedness for consideration in service learning course and project design. This workshop is introductory in nature and aims to present critical service learning as a pedagogical model for designing and integrating service learning with a social justice lens, one that integrates and activates all four of the Profiles for Undergraduate Success at IUPUI. Opportunities for future discussion, reflection, and resource sharing will be discussed.
