Senior University: Populating the Region

Populating the Region: The Calumet Region Mixing Bowl in the early 20th Century Since the time of the glaciers, Northwest Indiana has been a destination for a variety of peoples, ranging from Native Americans to Europeans to African-Americans to Mexicans and more. This presentation will be an historical overview of the “waves” of population groups locating in the Region, with emphasis on the late 19th century to the 1930s. Rather than serving as a “melting pot” during this period, we will see that the region’s variety of ethnic and racial groups formed more of a “mixing bowl” character, with over 50 different nationalities and races represented. 10 a.m. - noon, Friday, Aug. 9 Registration is required. To register, contact the Center for Urban and Regional Excellence at 219-980-6907 or curesu@iun.edu. This program has been made possible through a grant from Indiana Humanities in cooperation with the National Endowment for the Humanities.
